Zoning Board of Appeals
Composition of the Zoning Board of Appeals
Our town's Zoning Board of Appeals has five members, and three alternates, who each serve a four-year term.
Four of the five members and two of the three alternate members of the current board were endorsed by the Bethel Republicans when they were elected or appointed.
Responsibilities of the Zoning Board of Appeals
The fundamental function of the Zoning Board of Appeals is to grant variances from exacting application of the Zoning Regulations in circumstances when they create demonstrable hardships or practical difficulties for property owners.
This makes the Zoning Board of Appeals a protective measure for landowners from unfair application of the Regulations in particular circumstances. The Zoning Board of Appeals also hears appeals from the decisions of the Zoning Enforcement Official or Building Inspector when interpretations of the Zoning Regulations are involved.
