Police Commission
Composition of the Police Commission
Our town's Police Commission has five members who serve a four-year term. Every two years, either two or three members are elected or re-elected.Four of the five members of the current board were endorsed by the Bethel Republicans when they were elected or appointed.
Accomplishments of the Police Commission
Over the past four years, the Republican-endorsed Police Commission has:
- Created a budget for the last four years, the lowest budget being 2009
- Secured funding in the amount of $150,000 for new software
- Secured funding for new weapons for 36 men/women
- Maintained new 3-car level for each year
- Added more streets to the extra duty road construction list
- Secured agreement allowing more comfortable attire based on extra duty requirements
- Secured agreement to maintain the bicycle program
- Negotiated and resolved numerous grievances between the Police Union and the Town of Bethel
About the Police Commission
The Commission
- has the powers, duties and authority conferred or imposed upon it by local ordinance, special acts or by the General Statutes of the State of CT or by this Charter, including but not limited to being the sole and exclusive traffic authority in the Town
- has the authority and duty to prepare an annual budget and to submit the same to the Board of Selectmen
- has the authority to hire police officers, with the exception of the Chief of Police.
- The Commission is the sole authority that makes policy for the Police Department.
